Abstract	Tape 2 of a class by Allen Ginsberg on the topic of community and folk poetic traditions. Ginsberg discusses the “toast,” an African-American poetic form represented here by a poem called “The Signifying Monkey,” read by Ginsberg. Ginsberg also reads his own poem, “Don't Smoke,” inspired by Australian Aboriginal poetic traditions, and Mayakovsky's “At the Top of My Voice,” originally read for a Communist Party gathering. Ginsberg concludes the class with an analysis of the chord structure of the twelve-bar blues, and a 1929 recording from Harry Smith's Folkways Anthology.
